Buy Hillcrest Wine Online! Hillcrest Estate is nestled high up in the Tygerberg Hills (Durbanville ward). Our vineyards stretch from about 240m right up to 400m above sea level. Our red varieties are planted on the lower slopes, while our favourite Sauvignon Blanc vineyard brushes the 400m mark at the top of the hill.
Hillcrest Estate produces about 160 tons of excellent quality fruit every season, but most of this is sold to neighbouring cellars. This means is that we can select only the most outstanding blocks for our own cellar. Our own annual production is about 50 tons, which equates to about 3000 cases of wine. Being small is key to our philosophy. As a boutique cellar we can afford to be obsessive about quality.

Besides elevation, our proximity to the icy Atlantic Ocean also has a major cooling influence on our micro-climate. Our slopes have a West to North West orientation, so the view over the ocean from our vineyards is breathtaking. During the summer months our vineyards are constantly cooled by sea breezes. By day the famous Cape Doctor (South East wind) does its cooling work, while by night a gentle but cold on-shore Westerly breeze comes off the Atlantic. Of course these cool conditions, combined with hours of afternoon sun, make Hillcrest the ideal location for growing elegant, fruit driven wines. Each batch of fruit that we take into the cellar is meticulously handled. The same principle applies to the vineyards. A small production translates into more attention per vine, which yields better quality fruit. “It’s all about the fruit! If you haven’t got the best fruit you might as well forget it!” Graeme Read can be heard preaching this message in typically exuberant fashion as often as anyone will listen. Indeed, great care is taken in the vineyards to ensure that only superb quality fruit enters our small cellar. |
